What is the single most useful thing I can do?

Know where your water meter is, and know which way to turn it, before you ever need to. How long will you take to get to me?

Are flexi hoses really the usual culprit?

One of the most common, and they fail suddenly rather than gradually. They have a service life, they are cheap, and replacing them all during a planned visit is far better value out here than having one fail overnight and needing an emergency call across the region.

Can I claim anything back on a high water bill?

Possibly. Sydney Water may grant a hidden leak allowance where a licensed plumber has repaired a genuinely hidden leak. They ask for the plumber's business name, ABN, contact number and licence number along with the invoice, and ours carries all of it.
